Arriving at the town of Hana via the Hana Highway is a challenging yet magnificent experience. With over 600 turns on this narrow road, the bridges are all one lane. The drive is slow with one beautiful sight after another around every turn. It can be exhausting and many visitors opt to spend the night and make it a two-day experience. Ocean squalls roll in off the ocean soaking the tropical jungles and then evaporating into warm steamy afternoons. The average rainfall in Hana is close to 400 inches a year. Hana Bay, in the heart of Hana town, is a great gathering place for picnics.

Just outside of Hana is Hamoa Bay, a lovely crescent-shaped bay ringed by a comfortable sandy beach. With shade and showers, this Hana hang-out is popular with locals and visitors alike.

Past town going further east is the Ohe'o Gulch of Haleakala National Park. This beautiful area is a natural wonderland of waterfalls and freshwater pools cascading down to the ocean. The pools can quickly become dangerous rushing water and should be avoided during heavy rainfall. Oheo Gulch is very popular with visitors and the narrow roads can be quite challenging to drive.

The Southside road is rugged and mostly patchy pavement with a short distance of dirt road. It is a desert landscape with outstanding views of Kaupo Gap on the side of Haleakala. Rental cars are not allowed on this stretch and it is quite remote.
