Upcountry Maui Hawaii Accommodations

Real Estate in Upcountry is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Beautiful bi-coastal views and a variety of pleasant microclimates make the region on the flanks of Haleakala (The House of the Sun) a very desirable place to visit and live.

Upcountry Maui is very dynamic with a varied environment of grasslands, alpine forests, and a massive shield volcano. The local population of artists, gardeners, generational farmers and ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts live, play, and work in this heavenly region. The weather is cool and comfortable with warmer temperatures further downslope.

Winding roads lined in purple Jacaranda trees lead into pleasant neighborhoods and skirt large ranches. Upcountry is rich in history from the host Hawaiian culture, ranching families, and early immigrant settlers.

Makawao, Pukalani, Halilmaile, and Keokea town centers as well the regions of Kula, Olinda, and Ulupalakua, are scattered across the slopes of magnificent Mt. Haleakala. The entrance to the stunning Haleakala National Park is a 45-minute drive from Makawao.

Hali’imaile

The old pineapple plantation camp area of Hali'imaile is a neighborhood of small lots and older plantation homes. This area has been a hub of pineapple growing and harvesting for over a century.

The Hali'imaile General Store once serviced the camp and was converted to an upscale restaurant in the 1980s.

Hali'imaile is home to Hali'imaile Distilling and they do accept reservations for tours.

Their brand—PAU Maui Vodka—is distilled using the Maui Gold pineapple. Pineapples take 18 months to grow and ripen and harvesting time is critical as they can quickly overripen.

Pukalani

Pukalani, meaning "Hole in the Heavens" is anchored by a 50-year-old local grocery, the Pukalani Superette. This well-stocked store has been serving Upcountry families for generations. With a shopping center, golf course, and community center pool, Pukalani is convenient , has comfortable warmer weather and huge views.

Kula

Kula District has the most beautiful bi-coastal views on the island. The higher altitudes, cool weather, and less wind are attractive to folks who like their flannel shirts and a short drive up to the top of magnificent Haleakala at 10,000 feet above sea level.

Olinda

Olinda area is just Makawao and offers equestrian and hiking opportunities with amazing North Shore views. The Eucalyptus and Pine forests of Olinda are cooled by misty elevations.

Makawao

The Hale Ho'okipa Inn Makawao was my bed and breakfast for over 20 years. I have worked closely with a few B&B's in this area for several years. Many of my B&B guests fell in love with Maui and subsequently became Real Estate Clients. Makawao is a small vibrant town with Paniolo beginnings. From famous cream puffs to fine dining, wonderful galleries and great shopping, Makawao has something for everyone. Makawao is my home base and such a friendly and mellow town.
